Definitions of Feature Types


    cave:

     An underground chamber with an entrance to the surface (not manmade).

    caves:

      More than one cave listed under one heading, usually located very close to one another.

    feature:

      A natural feature that is noteworthy but does not fit into any other category (an arch, for example).

    insurgence

      A cave that has a river as a dominant feature, and the river enters the cave. The river may run year-round, or only in the wet season.

    pit

      Generally a cave that is deeper than it is long. A rope and/or gear is needed to descend.

    pits:

      More than one pit listed under one heading, usually located very close to one another.

    resurgence

      A cave that has a river as a dominant feature, and the river exits the cave. The river may run year-round, or only in the wet season.

    river cave

      A cave that has a river as a dominant feature, and the river enters and exits the cave. The river may run year-round, or only in the wet season. It may or may not be possible to make a through-trip from one entrance to the other.

    sink

      An obvious depression that does not have a known cave in it.
